ACT hosts the 2023 Mediterranean Machine Learning (M2L) summer school

Leading scientists and researchers from around the world, who focus on cutting-edge research in the fields of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, will attend the 2023 edition of the Mediterranean Machine Learning (M2L) summer school that will take place at the American College of Thessaloniki (ACT) in Thessaloniki from August, 28th to September, 2nd.

After two consecutive and successful years in Italy, the summer school is hosted for the first time in Thessaloniki. It is organized by the AI Education Foundation and supported by Google DeepMindACT (American College of Thessaloniki)Aegean AirlinesDeloitte (Deloitte Competence Center), the Pfizer Center for Digital Innovation (CDI)AISERA Reply, under the patronage of the School of Informatics, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.

The target audience consists primarily of advanced Master students, Doctoral students, academics, and practitioners from all around the world (including Germany, Greece, USA, UK, India, Iran, Spain, Italy, Canada, China, Morocco, Bangladesh, Nigeria, Netherlands, Tunisia), with a focus on the Mediterranean area. 

The applications from all over the world exceeded 800, and the final selection of 180 participants was based on academic criteria, technical background and some prior understanding and practical machine learning experience.

The 2023 Mediterranean Machine Learning (M2L) summer school is structured around six days of keynotes, lectures and practical sessions delivered by prominent scientists and researchers, including Yoshua Bengio (MILA), Arnaud Doucet (University of Oxford), Annette Obika (Google Deepmind), Eric Nalisnick (Amsterdam University), Fabio Viola (Google DeepMind), Giorgia Ramponi (ETH), Iulia Duta (University of Cambridge), Jimmy Shi (Google DeepMind), Nora Kassner (Google DeepMind), Roberta Raileanu (Meta), Sahand Sharifzadeh (Google DeepMind), Sander Dieleman (Google DeepMind), Shannon Vallor (University of Edinburgh), Tharindi Hapuarachchi (Google DeepMind) and distinguished Greeks abroad such as Christos Papadimitriou (Columbia University), Yannis Assael (Google DeepMind)Xenia Miscouridou (Imperial College London), Maria Liakata (The Alan Turing Institute), Konstantina Palla (Spotify).

Topics include:

During the summer school, on Thursday 31 August, 12:00-13:00, the panel entitled "AI opportunities in the Mediterranean region" will take place with speakers Konstantinos Kyranakis, Deputy Minister of Digital Governance of Greece, Dimitris Gerogiannis, CEO, AEGEAN, Vasilios Vassalos, Director of AI, AISERA, Federico Neri, AI Director, Deloitte Italy, Katerina Tzouvara, Gen AI Ambassador & Customer Engineer Public Sector, Google Greece, Thanos Stavropoulos, Technology & Innovation Senior Manager, Pfizer CDI. 

"It is our duty as scientists abroad to contribute to our country. Thus, the goal of M2L School is to strengthen local activity and enrich the know-how in the field of Artificial Intelligence in the Mediterranean", said Yannis Assael on behalf of the organizing team, which consists of Andrea Banino, Dimitris Kotzias, Francesco Romano, Francesco Visin, Martina Zambelli, Nemanja Rakićević and himself.

On behalf of ACT (American College of Thessaloniki), the tertiary division of Anatolia College, which hosts and supports the M2L summer school, Anatolia College President, Dr. Panos Vlachos, stressed the importance of the event in Thessaloniki at "a time when our city is gradually emerging as an international Innovation Center. The presence in Thessaloniki of such renowned scientists and researchers from all over the world - many of them Greeks - places Thessaloniki on the world map of the developments that Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning bring to our society".
