Weekend Programs

The Anna Papageorgiou STEM Center organizes extracurricular programs for elementary school students. We invite children to explore the world of STEM, develop technical ideas, and have a creative weekend.

Through STEM, children learn to think creatively and solve problems. They develop observational intuition, countless skills, and the ability to collaborate with others. With the help of STEM, children not only discover the world but also their own abilities and potential. Thus, they gain the confidence and inspiration to shape the future and change the world by making it better, more efficient, and greener!

Students will explore the world of technology and scientific applications. We learn about the ultra-modern F1 cars, the impressive circuits, and how engineers work to make these cars so fast and safe. We learn how robots can help in our daily lives and how they are programmed to perform various tasks. We deal with aerodynamics, how airplanes can fly in the air. We introduce wind energy and learn how this clean energy can help protect the environment and make our world more sustainable.

With these exciting STEM activities, our young explorers will have the opportunity to discover the secrets of the world around them, encouraging their curiosity and strengthening their interest in science and technology. Get ready to explore the world of STEM with a lot of curiosity, fun, and learning!

Kindergarten STEM Family Day

Every year, Anatolia College organizes a Kindergarten STEM Family Day for our youngest students, in Pre-K and Kindergarten. Children, together with their parents, participate in fun activities and share their enthusiasm for science.

In an era where science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) are an integral part of society, cultivating a love for these fields from a young age is more important than ever. The Kindergarten STEM Family Day provides a unique opportunity for families to explore the exciting world of STEM through hands-on activities, experiments, and collaborative learning. STEM education equips children with critical thinking, problem-solving, and analytical thinking skills, which are essential in today's technological world. Through participation in STEM activities, children develop their curiosity about how things work and gain confidence in their ability to innovate and create. For parents, participating in these activities with their children not only strengthens family bonds but also allows them to support and encourage their children's educational journey.

The goal of the activities is to show parents experiments using simple materials that they can also do at home, demonstrating that STEM is fun and can be done in any environment.

F1 in Schools Program in Primary Education

F1 in Schools is an innovative educational approach based on the inquiry-based learning model, involving all 6th-grade students at Anatolia Elementary School as part of their STEM class.

The program, named "F1 in Schools," is approved by the Greek Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs (172915/2020) and is implemented in a series of lessons within the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) curriculum. It offers students the opportunity to explore the world of physics, engineering, design, and innovation.

The F1 in Schools program is a comprehensive educational experience that promotes teamwork, creativity, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills. Students will have the opportunity to:

• Work in teams
• Learn about aerodynamics
• Design and model cars
• Build physical prototypes
• Consider the cost of construction
• Take into account environmental impacts
• Participate in marketing and sponsorship activities

What is the F1 in Schools program?

Anatolia College, as the official F1 in Schools Academy for Northern Greece, has adapted the F1 in Schools competition material for primary schools. The F1 in Schools competition is open to schools, educators, and primary school students in the same way that the F1 in Schools competition for older students has been implemented for several years. Through the F1 in Schools program, students learn to design 2D F1 models and then build 3D miniature F1 cars from sheets of cardboard, following specific design and construction processes adapted using the Stanford University Design Thinking model (Hasso Plattner Institute of Design at Stanford). Design thinking encourages innovation, enhances creative thinking, and promotes 21st-century skills.

Anatolia College F1 in Schools STEM Academy

In September 2022, Anatolia College announced the establishment of the Anatolia College F1 in Schools STEM Academy at the Anna Papageorgiou STEM Center, in collaboration with F1 in Schools Limited. The initiative aims to inform and support student teams wishing to participate in the competition. The Anatolia College F1 in Schools STEM Academy is a space where students from any school can realize their ideas using CNC and 3D printers, test them using a standard F1 in Schools Race Track, and receive useful information about all aspects of the competition. The Academy guides local teams by organizing workshops for students and school visits. With the creation of the Anatolia College F1 in Schools STEM Academy, educators in the wider community also benefit, as they have the opportunity to participate in training seminars and have access to the latest technologies in the STEM field.

Green Education for a Sustainable Future - Green Edu

Green Edu is a project that aims to support teachers across Europe in integrating the principles of green education into STEM curricula. It seeks to inspire and improve teachers' skills in order to introduce innovative topics to the classroom, such as Green Chemistry, Green Engineering and Robotics, and Green Biotechnology. It also encourages the integration of green principles into school workshops. Partner countries: Greece, Czech Republic, Romania, Turkey, Italy.

Mini Open Labs

The main goal of the project is to create and test an open community and practical approach to Sustainable Development and STEM Education, based on:

• Mini OpenLabs setting
• Production of a book of activities with STEM projects on sustainable development issues
• Conducting workshops for teachers and children on Sustainable Development and STEM issues

A Mini open lab  is defined as a space open to the educational community. This means that the open laboratory can be used for educational purposes which could include:

Workshops open to the whole educational community

Co-organization of events with Universities or educational groups

Co-organization of events for dissemination or ratification of funded projects.

Shaping STEAM Education for young children through Gaming - SEGA

Start date February 2022 - End date January 2025

The SEGA project aims to support educators, students and parents in pre-school education and care (ECEC) in developing STEAM skills.

The aim is to develop a toolbox and a playful e-book for Teachers and Teachers for STEAM in Preschool Education and Care (ECEC) (children from 6 to 8 years old) with additional digital material by developing, testing and providing ECEC educators and teachers with a source on how to apply STEAM activities by promoting and cultivating 21st century skills at ages K-2. The pedagogical approach will include methods of playfulness and the development of serious games for early education.

WeAreEurope SD – A Learning Approach for Sustainable Development Education for Primary School Level

Start date February 2022- End date 2025

WeAreEurope SD is a sequel of the project WeareEurope that successfully ran from September of 2015 to August 2018.  The project aimed to strengthen the tie between children and the European Union and with the values of a diverse and inclusive Europe. As an outcome a wide set of activities with the final purpose of creating an innovative online educational game for European Citizenship Education of children between 6 and 10 years old was developed.

WeAreEurope SD aims to strengthen the tie between children and the European Union focusing on values of sustainable development and support teachers around Europe to integrate green education principles in the STEM curriculum. The platform and game will include green- STEM activities -sustainable development education ( green cities, renewable energy, monument restoration etc). 

CThink

The objectives for this project are to embark on a grassroots approach to the integration of Computational Thinking (CT) across the three partner European countries. The aim is to create an unplugged board game that incorporates the competencies of CT in such a way that students acquire the competencies as they collaboratively engage in playing the board game. Another aim is to integrate the use of this board game in the very early stages of schooling, as we believe this will help pave the way to a continued and improved integration of CT throughout the primary school years, and beyond. This is a process which is necessary in order to be able to truly work towards equipping our future generation of students with the skills and competencies required to survive and progress in our modern societies. In trying to achieve this, the objectives of the project are to: 

• Understand the early years context
• Identify the needs and challenges that exist within this setting
• Work with teachers to engineer the board game and other related activities and lesson plans which focus on the promotion of CT skills and competencies within this setting
• Train teachers in the correct pedagogical use of these games and activities
• Implement the resultant board game and related activities in the classroom and integrate CT within the schools across the three participating European countries
• Evaluate the implementation of the board game and associated lesson plans
• Translate the board game and associated lesson plans and activities from English to each native language of the participating European country and disseminate the good practices learned not just within these schools but also beyond

Blooming the future

Promoting diversity and inclusion in the  STEAM field from a young age  is crucial for a sustainable future.  Blooming the future aims  to promote gender equality in  STEAM by  creating an inclusive European STEAM sustainable community.  Empowering  girls to become leaders in STEAM fields but also changing boys’ attitudes to girls studying STEM subjects is imperative for  closing the gender gap in STEAM fields.

This aim is going to be achieved through a three-fold action.

First an online platform that will include:

1. A Blooming STEAM toolkit.
2. A digital story book. 
3. STEM scientific articles written by leading women in STEM fields adapted for young children

Second, an online  network of  scientists , educators, entrepreneurs that will  act as mentors and support the advancement of girls in STEM careers and to raise awareness of gender equality all over Europe.

Third, training of teachers in order to promote gender equality from a young age and engage students in novel fields of sustainable science. 

STEAM EmbRaCe

STE(A)M EmbRaCe aims to promote inclusion by engaging and inspiring students from different backgrounds. Students work on real-world STE(A)M problems, which will help develop their cultural empathy, resilience, and creative thinking. The idea is to create digital content which will be ready to be used by teachers in any classroom setting. More specifically, the project will allow the development of a 7-week course and teacher training on how to use the developed material with students.

About the Scientix STE(A)M Partnership Education Resilience in Europe:

The Education resilience in Europe initiative, supported by the Scientix STE(A)M Partnerships and funded by Cisco, aims to identify, and support projects which address the challenges encountered while integrating students from different cultural and language backgrounds. The selected projects will develop best practices and provide tools for a smoother integration of students, and, finally, share the results with interested stakeholders.
