Every Voice in the Spotlight: Drama Club Performs A Chorus Line
Over two weekends, the Drama Club captivated audiences with its production of A Chorus Line, the iconic musical originally conceived by Michael Bennet. Set during a Broadway audition, the show follows a group of dancers competing for a place in the chorus of a new production. As the audition unfolds, each performer steps forward to share personal memories, dreams, and insecurities, turning a competition into a revealing portrait of ambition and identity.
With 19 actors and 12 dancers on stage, supported by a dedicated backstage crew, this year’s production was a genuine ensemble effort. True to the spirit of the musical, there was no clear leading role and no traditional supporting cast. Instead, every actor had the opportunity to step into the spotlight and tell their story. This structure became one of the production’s greatest strengths, allowing the audience to recognize parts of themselves in the wide range of characters presented.
Under the direction of Vangelis Manitakis and Panagiotis Pantzarelas, the performance maintained a strong balance between individuality and collective cohesion. The emotional range, from sharp humor and witty lines to moments of vulnerability and difficult personal stories, created an experience that was both entertaining and meaningful.
The vibrant choreography by Christina Pagidou highlighted both technical precision and expressive storytelling. The minimal stage, defined by mirrors at the back, effectively recreated the atmosphere of a real dance audition. The mirrors served not only as rehearsal tools for the performers but also as subtle moments of reflection, as characters seemed to look themselves in the eye while confronting their choices and aspirations. Costumes by Christina Douris reinforced this realism, capturing the simplicity and functionality of audition attire while maintaining a cohesive visual identity for the ensemble. The vocal performances, supported by Effie Ratsou, strengthened the musical dimension of the show and supported the demanding solo moments that are central to the work.
With A Chorus Line, the Drama Club successfully presented a demanding musical built on teamwork and individual expression. This year’s production stood out for the way it gave equal weight to every performer, highlighting the value of collaboration and shared responsibility on stage.
