Welfare Trip to Mt Athos
Fifteen (15) members of the Welfare Club, accompanied by advisor Aristotelis Papaioannou and chaperones Apostolos Tsirigotis and Aris Rogkotis, visited two of the most iconic monasteries in the Athos peninsula, April 19-21, 2024. On the first day, the group had the opportunity to admire the unique architecture of Simonos Petra, which is built on the edge of a steep granite rock and is defined by a seven-story turreted building on a large turreted base. The students were also given a detailed tour of the monastery’s famous library, which contains more than 100,000 books and a large number of medieval manuscripts. On the second day, the group visited the monastery of Agios Pavlos, one of the oldest monasteries in Athos, built at the foot of Mt Athos in the late 10th century AD, and enjoyed the unspoiled surrounding nature. The trip also gave students the opportunity to venerate holy relics and icons and to discover the mysticism of the orthodox religion.
